Please note you will need a high level of English to complete this course and if you require additional support such as a reader/recorder or BSL, these aren’t available for the Health and Safety Awareness online OnVUE exam. To take the end of course exam online you must have access to a laptop or desktop computer, it cannot be taken on a mobile or tablet.

Exam
What the health and safety awareness exam involves:
- You’ll sit a 30-minute multiple-choice exam
- There are 25 questions to answer: 20 worth 1 mark, 5 worth 2 marks.
- The pass mark is of 25 out of 30
- Before you start, you’ll be required to present a valid photographic ID (a passport or UK/EU driving licence)
- Individuals aged 16 to 18 years old will need a parent or guardian to attend the exam check-in process with Pearson VUE.
Please complete a system test on the computer and network you’ll be using for the exam before you begin. See the Technical section for more information.

Your achievement
Upon passing your exam, you’ll receive:
- Access to your 'score report' from our examination provider, Pearson VUE, showing your pass mark.
- A digital certificate, confirming you have successfully completed the course. This will be available to download from your CITB eCourses Dashboard and is valid for five years.
The certificate is equivalent to the Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment and can be used along with the CITB Health and Safety Environment Test for Operatives to support your application for a CSCS labourer card.

Technical requirements for the examination
- Operating system: Windows 11, version 23H2, Mac OS 15. Note: Windows operating systems must pass genuine windows validation. Windows Vista, Windows XP and Windows 7 are strictly prohibited for exam delivery. All Linux/Unix based operating systems are strictly prohibited
- RAM: OS specified minimum RAM, 4 GB or more
- Display: Minimum resolution 1024 x 768 in 16-bit colour
- Internet browser: The most recent versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Internet Explorer or Safari
- Internet connection: For optimal performance, a reliable and stable connection speed of 3 Mbps down and 2 Mbps up is required. Tethering to a mobile hotspot is explicitly prohibited
- Webcam, sound, and microphone: No headphones or Earphones. Webcam must have a minimum resolution of 640 x 480 @ 10 fps. Mac users may need to allow OnVUE within their ‘System Preferences: Security & Privacy: Privacy’ settings for the microphone, camera, automation and input monitoring
- Device: All mobiles and tablets are strictly forbidden. Work-Issued devices are not recommended (please check OnVUE Candidate Technical Requirements)

- You can request a refund within 28 days of purchase, but only if you haven’t accessed the eCourse by pressing the ‘start’ button.
- If you bought vouchers you can request a refund within 28 days of purchase, but only if the voucher hasn’t been redeemed.
What if I need to retake the exam?
There is a £21 fee if you need to retake your exam.
Can I use a tablet or smartphone?
- To complete an eCourse we recommend that you use a desktop computer, laptop or standard-sized tablet (not a smartphone)
- To take the end of course examination online you can only use a desktop computer or laptop – see Technical requirements.
This HSA course is grant eligible
All Levy-registered employers can claim £30 grant for each employee who completed their course before the 01st April 2023 and for those that completed it on or after 01st April 2023, £60 can be claimed.
For the grant payment to be made automatically the employer’s CITB levy number must be provided when purchasing a course or redeeming a voucher. Your employer will be able to confirm this for you.
